Job Description Summary:

We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our PerkinElmer Scientific Services team as a Lab Steward. This role provides critical support to scientists and researchers by maintaining the cleanliness, organization, and readiness of laboratory environments. The Lab Steward is responsible for the collection, washing, sterilization, and redistribution of scientific glassware, as well as for upholding overall laboratory hygiene and organization.

The Lab Steward role is a integral to the smooth and efficient operation of the research laboratories, ensuring that clean, sterile materials and orderly workspaces are consistently available to support scientific discovery.

Job Responsibilities

Glassware Processing & Sterilization

  • Collect, wash, and sanitize contaminated scientific glassware and plasticware, including beakers, graduated cylinders, and other laboratory items.
  • Operate laboratory dishwashers and autoclaves to ensure glassware and consumables are fully cleaned and sterilized for reuse.
  • Prepare and load glassware for autoclaving, ensuring correct sterilization cycles are used and proper documentation is maintained.
  • Inspect glassware post-cleaning for cleanliness, integrity, and readiness for laboratory use.
  • Adhere to established protocols for handling, transporting, and storing both contaminated and sterile materials.

Stocking & Lab Organization

  • Stock and maintain Point-of-Use (POU) areas with clean and autoclaved glassware and consumables.
  • Monitor inventory levels of clean glassware and communicate shortages proactively.
  • Organize laboratory storage areas, ensuring materials and supplies are logically arranged and labeled.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderliness in glasswash and autoclave rooms.
  • Order replacement glassware when required or when stocks reach safety levels for re-order.

Lab Hygiene & Environmental Support

  • Perform routine cleaning of laboratory benchtops, work surfaces, and areas surrounding instrumentation.
  • Support laboratory hygiene standards by maintaining organized, clutter-free, and compliant work areas.
  • Dispose of waste and recyclable materials following proper safety and environmental protocols.
  • Identify and report any maintenance or safety issues observed within lab spaces.

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

  • Partner with scientists, lab coordinators, and site leads to ensure glassware and hygiene needs are met efficiently.
  • Support laboratory organization projects, 5S initiatives, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Provide cross-coverage and assist with general lab service activities as needed.
  • Maintain compliance with all training, safety, and environmental health standards.

Critical Skills:

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and capable of working independently with minimal supervision.
  • Basic understanding of laboratory safety, contamination control, and sterilization principles.
  • Proficiency with basic computer applications (Outlook, Excel, Word).

Basic Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent with 1+ years inventory management experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prior experience with laboratory glasswash and autoclave systems.
  • Knowledge of GLP/GxP environments and laboratory safety standards.
  • Familiarity with 5S and continuous improvement principles.


Working Environment:

  • Must be able to work in a laboratory, controlled environments requiring personal protective equipment (e.g., lab coat, safety glasses, etc.) in laboratory. 
  • Job pace may be fast and job completion demands may be high. 
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position more than 25% of the time 
  • The person needs to occasionally move between labs, corridors, adjoining rooms, and buildings onsite Frequently operate on instruments, objects, tools or controls, which will require regularly bending, squatting, stretching and reaching in order to perform in a service function.   
  • Occasionally move or lift up to 25 pounds (potential for occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds). 
  • Specific vision abilities required by this position include without limitation, the ability to observe details at close range distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus in order to perform the essential service functions of this position.   
  • Occasionally operates a computer and other office machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer. 
  • Employee may be required to handle hazardous waste according to local, state, and federal regulations.  Duties may include identifying, handling, generating, accumulating, storing and labeling hazardous waste. 
  • Potential risk to lab-based hazards including but not limited to extreme temperature, biological materials, and hazardous chemicals.
  • May be required to complete Medical Clearance, Respiratory Protection Training, and Fit Testing to wear a respirator as protection against hazards present in the laboratory environment.

The annual compensation range for this full-time position is $(40,000) to $(60,000). The final base pay offered to the successful candidate will be determined by factors including internal equity, work location, as well as individual qualifications, such as job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.
