Position Summary:

This full-time Bioassay Scientist position is for a PhD level scientist in the R&D Consumable Development Department. The successful candidate will bring experience in scientific research with expertise in performing cell-based and biomolecular assays. Operating in a nimble and dynamic environment, the Scientist will be involved in assay, reagent, and consumable product development for current and novel image cytometry systems. This role will also be involved in working with current or potential customers for new assay and application development using Nexcelom’s image cytometry systems, consumables, and reagents. In addition, the Scientist will have an opportunity to work in collaboration with academic and industry labs to generate data for scientific conference presentations, posters, and publications. Boston area based, specifically Lawrence Massachusetts.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead all phases of consumable development, from concept through transfer into production. Responsibilities include generating DOE’s (Design of Experiment), collecting and interpreting feasibility data for cell-based assays, optimizing reagent/consumable formulation, testing product stability, validating reagent function on multiple cell lines and instrumentation platforms, and producing customer-facing and production documentation, SOPs, and QC specifications.
  • Bench work will be expected as part of the position to develop products for multiple imaging platforms.
  • Analyze, interpret, and present all gathered data to appropriate (internal or external) teams. Ensure that data generated is timely, scientifically rigorous, in line with the proposed study design, and follows industry’s best practice. Formulate next action steps.
  • Train/coach junior staff on cell-based and biomolecular assays as well as Nexcelom image cytometry systems.
  • Develop consumable/reagent QC parameters.
  • Produce/review the necessary consumable documentation and SOPs for downstream production group
  • Responsible for day-to-day operations of the research laboratory.
  • Collaborate with different departments internally to set up biological experiments and test new equipment and consumables for next generation development.
  • Monitor market trends and information to identify potential new areas for development.
  • Support new scientific collaborations and applications.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and conferences; review professional publications and participate in professional societies.

  • PhD in biology, cell biology, molecular biology, cancer biology, chemistry, bioengineering, or related field.
  • Industry experience (2-5 years) is highly desired but not required.
  • Experience in reagent development and assay development using immunocytochemistry, immunofluorescence, and/or flow cytometry techniques is preferred.
  • Experience with fluorescent microscopy, image cytometry, and flow cytometry is required.
  • Computer software experience in image analysis (ImageJ), flow cytometry data analysis (FCS Express, FlowJo, or similar), Word, and Excel is strongly desired.
  • Experience in 2D and 3D cell-based assays, cancer biological assays, biomolecular assays, and fluorescence-based assays is preferred.
  • Able to critically interpret bioassay results, efficiently troubleshoot, and present findings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Experience writing manuscripts and/or proposals.
  • Good project management, organization skills and attention to detail; ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Willingness to learn new concepts and challenge boundaries; adaptability to change.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with an eagerness to work with and support colleagues in other departments.


  • Ph.D. in biology, cell biology, molecular biology, cancer biology, immunology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or related field.
