Purpose
PerkinElmer is seeking a Strategic Segment Manager to own the full go-to-market strategy for Petrochemicals, Mining & Metals. This is a market-facing, intelligence-led role that sits at the intersection of product strategy and commercial execution.
The segment spans six applications in two groups. Energy & Petroleum: lubricating-oil condition monitoring, refinery and petrochemical laboratory QC, and natural gas analysis. Mining & Metals: mine-site grade, process and environmental control, exploration geochemistry (geological surveys, rare-earth producers, research institutes) and metals purity QC at smelters, refiners and aerospace materials laboratories. The business spans instruments across our portfolio of inorganic (ICP-MS, ICP-OES & AA), chromatography (LCMS & GCMS) and material characterization (IR, UV & thermal analysis) products, and is concentrated in energy applications.
The Strategic Segment Manager is the organization's foremost expert on their assigned market: the customer workflows, competitive dynamics, regulatory environment, and purchasing patterns that determine how PerkinElmer wins or loses in that segment. They translate this expertise into Market Requirements Documents that shape product roadmaps, go-to-market playbooks that guide commercial execution, and value propositions that give the sales organization a compelling story to tell.
This is a cross-product-line role. The Strategic Segment Manager sees the segment horizontally — understanding how customers in their market use the full range of PerkinElmer's analytical capabilities, and identifying where the portfolio wins, where it loses, and where it needs to evolve.
The successful candidate will inherit a segment with a distributor-led global footprint. The first-year mandate is to build the segment market model (market size, share and installed base by sub-segment and geography), diagnose current growth trends, and set the growth thesis for the segment.
Responsibilities:
Market Intelligence & VOC
- Maintain deep, current knowledge of the assigned segment: customer workflows, buying behavior, regulatory and compliance requirements, competitive landscape, and technology adoption trends
- Execute a structured VOC program, covering current users, competitive users, and prospective customers across the segment's key geographies and sub-verticals
- Build and maintain relationships with key opinion leaders, industry associations, regulatory bodies, and academic partners in the segment — establishing PerkinElmer as a credible, trusted partner in the relevant scientific community
- Conduct systematic competitive intelligence: tracking competitor product launches, pricing, application claims, and go-to-market moves — translating intelligence into actionable competitive response recommendations
Market Analytics & Segment Economics
· Build and maintain the segment market model: total and serviceable market, PerkinElmer share, and installed base by sub-segment, geography and product family, triangulated from internal data, competitor disclosures, distributor data and external research
· Own the segment taxonomy and account assignment in CRM
· Analyze orders, pipeline and win/loss data and present insights and diagnosis to leadership with recommended actions
Market Requirements Documents (MRDs)
- Own the segment's Market Requirements Document — the structured, evidence-based articulation of customer needs, competitive gaps, and product investment priorities for the assigned segment across all relevant PerkinElmer product lines
- Update and maintain the MRD on a structured annual cadence, with interim updates when significant market events (competitive launches, regulatory changes, customer feedback patterns) require immediate revision
- Present MRD findings and recommendations to the VP Product Line teams, VP Marketing, and Sr. Director — defending investment priorities with customer evidence and commercial data, not assumption
- Ensure MRD inputs are formally adopted into at least one VP Product Line roadmap planning cycle per year, tracking implementation of MRD-driven product decisions
Go-to-Market Strategy & Commercial Enablement
- Develop the segment go-to-market strategy: target customer profiles, channel strategy across direct key accounts and distributor-led markets, pricing and configuration guidance, campaign themes, value proposition hierarchy, and commercial messaging that positions PerkinElmer's portfolio competitively in the assigned segment
- Produce commercially actionable segment enablement tools: competitive battlecards, segment application guides, customer workflow maps, and sales playbooks that Regional Marketing Managers and the field sales organization can deploy immediately
- Partner with the Portfolio marketing team to brief and review segment-specific campaign content — ensuring technical accuracy, commercial relevance, and strategic alignment with the segment's priority themes
- Drive annual growth planning for the assigned segment — identifying the highest-priority growth initiatives, the product line actions required to capture them, and the commercial resources needed to win
- Define and lead named-account programs for customer groups that span the segment in partnership with regional sales leaders
Thought Leadership & External Presence
- Represent PerkinElmer in the segment's technical community — standards bodies (ASTM, ISO), industry conferences and customer advisory events — and develop targeted thought-leadership content where it directly supports the segment's priority themes
- Contribute to PerkinElmer's customer advisory board programming for the segment — designing agendas, facilitating discussions, and translating advisory input into commercial and product management action
Success Metrics
- MRD completion and adoption — annual MRD delivered on schedule and formally adopted in at least one VP Product Line roadmap planning cycle
- VOC coverage — minimum 25 documented in-depth customer conversations per year
- Segment growth contribution — revenue growth in the assigned segment vs. prior year and vs. market growth rate
- Enablement asset quality and utilization — Portfolio marketing content briefed, commercial tools produced, and field adoption rate of segment playbooks and battlecards
- Competitive win rate in the segment — tracked through win/loss analysis
Qualifications & Experience:
Required
- 5+ years of experience, with demonstrated examples of the work described in this role, in product management, segment marketing, market intelligence, or applications science within analytical instrumentation, life sciences tools, or a closely adjacent scientific or industrial technology business
- Deep domain expertise in at least one half of the segment — energy and petrochemicals, or mining and metals — with the demonstrated capacity to learn the other quickly; sufficient scientific acumen to engage credibly with customer scientists, interpret regulatory requirements, and identify commercially significant technical developments without specialist support· Demonstrated experience conducting structured VOC programs and translating customer insight into rigorous, commercially actionable product strategy inputs
- Experience producing strategic documents — Market Requirements Documents, market assessments, or competitive analyses — used to drive product investment decisions
- Demonstrated experience building market models (market size, share, installed base) from incomplete data and using them to set investment and commercial priorities
- Experience shaping channel and pricing strategy across direct key-account and distributor-led commercial models
- Strong communication skills: able to write and present at a high standard for both technical and commercial audiences
- Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Physics, Engineering, or a related scientific discipline
Preferred
- Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) providing peer-level scientific credibility with customers and with the product line PM teams the Segment Manager must influence
- Experience working in a refinery, mine-site, inspection or metals QC laboratory — as a researcher, analytical chemist, regulatory specialist, or applications expert — giving first-hand understanding of customer workflows and decision drivers
- Commercial experience in Greater China or in distributor-led emerging markets (Latin America, Middle East & Africa, Central Asia)
- Experience spanning both energy/petrochemicals and mining/metals
- Experience building competitive intelligence systems or structured VOC programs where none previously existed
- Travel: 10-20% global travel, including Greater China, Latin America and the Middle East
